Every song on Born in the U.S.A. was written by Bruce Springsteen, drawn largely from material recorded with the E Street Band during the same sessions that produced the stark Nebraska. The record became the best-selling album of his career and spun off seven consecutive top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat matched by few albums of its era. Its title track was widely misread as a triumphant anthem when it is in fact a bitter portrait of a Vietnam veteran returning to a country that has little use for him.
