By the Numbers
Good Time is the clearest showcase of Alan Jackson the writer. He wrote all 17 tracks himself with no co-writers, an unusual feat for a mainstream country album of its era, so the composer column is Alan Eugene Jackson from start to finish. Keith Stegall produces every track, the long-running partnership behind most of Jackson's catalog. The songs mix barroom fun with plainspoken autobiography, from the small-town portraits of 'Small Town Southern Man' and '1976' to the personal grief of 'Sissy's Song.'
Good Time is the thirteenth studio album by Alan Jackson, released March 4, 2008 on Arista Nashville and produced by Keith Stegall. It is a rare all-self-written record: Jackson wrote every one of the 17 tracks alone, with no outside writers anywhere on the album. The material runs from up-tempo honky-tonk on the title track to the autobiographical 'Small Town Southern Man,' the childhood snapshot '1976,' and the grief tribute 'Sissy's Song,' written after the death of a housekeeper at Jackson's home. Martina McBride joins him for the duet 'Never Loved Before,' and the album closes on the gospel-leaning 'If Jesus Walked the World Today.' It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with about 119,000 copies in its first week and was later certified platinum by the RIAA. The record produced three consecutive number-one country singles in 'Small Town Southern Man,' 'Good Time,' and 'Country Boy.'
