Konvicted is Akon's commercial peak, anchored by three blockbuster singles he co-wrote and largely produced: "Smack That" with Eminem, "I Wanna Love You" with Snoop Dogg, and "Don't Matter," the latter two both reaching No. 1. He wrote his own hooks and verses while pulling in marquee guests, and the album went 6x Platinum and earned three Grammy nominations.
Akon's second album and his commercial peak, out in November 2006 and cut at White Room Studios in Detroit between April 2005 and June 2006. He produced most of it himself, mixing R&B with hip hop and reggae, and brought in Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Styles P, and T-Pain. It opened at number two with 284,000 copies, held the top twenty for 28 straight weeks, and finished 2007 as the second best selling record of the year in the US. The title leans on a prison history Akon told for years. The Smoking Gun reviewed the court records in 2008 and found no conviction and no prison time, and his only conviction is a 1998 gun charge that brought three years of probation. Akon's answer was that the three years were shorter sentences added together.
