Data Insight
Marley's publishing credits are unusually complex. Official songwriter credits on many of his most famous recordings were assigned to close associates, including Vincent Ford, Rita Marley, Carlton Barrett, Aston Barrett, and Allen Cole, rather than to Marley himself. This practice stemmed partly from a dispute with Cayman Music (controlled by manager Danny Sims) that effectively locked Marley out of royalties from his early Island-era compositions, and partly from his practice of sharing income with loyal associates by placing their names on publishing documents. The credits in this database reflect the official published credits, not necessarily the true authorship, which was overwhelmingly Marley's own.
