Trouble is a heavily self-made debut: Akon produced most of it himself and wrote his own material, drawing on his brief incarceration for the breakout single "Locked Up." The smash "Lonely" is built on a sped-up sample of Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely," and reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album established his signature mix of melodic hooks and street narratives.
Akon's debut, released in June 2004 and recorded at White Room Studio in Detroit between September 2003 and March 2004. He produced most of it himself. SRC put out the hard-edged "Locked Up" first to build a street audience, holding back the crossover ballad "Lonely," which flips a sped-up sample of Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely." It sold 25,000 copies in its first US week, later reached double Platinum on 1.6 million sold, and spent two weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart.
