Data Insight

My Love Is Your Love teamed Whitney Houston with a new generation of writers and producers, including Wyclef Jean, Rodney Jerkins, Missy Elliott, and Lauryn Hill, yet she still wrote none of its 13 songs. Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis wrote the reggae-tinged title track, the Rodney Jerkins team wrote It's Not Right but It's Okay, and Babyface co-wrote the Mariah Carey duet When You Believe. Houston took a co-producer credit on the album, but after four studio records she had still never written one of her own hits.

My Love Is Your Love is the fourth studio album by Whitney Houston, released in November 1998 on Arista Records and produced by Rodney Jerkins, Wyclef Jean, Missy Elliott, and others, her first collection of entirely new studio material after a six-year gap following The Bodyguard soundtrack and various film soundtracks, and the album that reconnected her with contemporary hip-hop and R&B production at a time when New Jack Swing had given way to a harder, sample-based R&B aesthetic. Houston wrote or co-wrote several tracks including 'My Love Is Your Love' (with Wyclef Jean) and 'If I Told You That' (later released as a duet with George Michael); the songwriting participation was greater than on any previous album, reflecting the more collaborative producer relationships built into the sessions. 'Heartbreak Hotel' (featuring Kelly Price and Faith Evans) reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100; 'It's Not Right But It's Okay' reached number four and won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female; the title track became a holiday perennial with over 100 million streams annually. My Love Is Your Love has been certified four-times platinum in the United States, reached number thirteen on the Billboard 200, and is critically regarded as the artistic high point of the later Houston catalog, the album on which the production partnerships matched her vocal instrument rather than simply deploying it. It demonstrated that Houston's voice had survived her early 1990s period and remained a commercially and artistically viable instrument.
