By the Numbers
I Look to You is the sixth and final studio album by Whitney Houston, released in August 2009 on Arista Records and produced by David Foster, Alicia Keys, Akon, Harvey Mason Jr., and others, her first album in six years and what became, retrospectively, the last studio recording of her career before her death in February 2012. Houston wrote no original material; the album's songs were provided by outside writers, and the production reflects both the adult contemporary commercial approach Houston had built her career on and a more gospel-inflected emotional register, particularly in the title track, a David Foster production that is among the most direct spiritual statements of her recorded output. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 305,000 first-week sales, her highest-charting debut on the chart, and reached the top five in several European countries, demonstrating that her fanbase remained commercially significant despite the gap. The title track, released as the lead single, received Grammy nominations and was performed at the 2009 American Music Awards in what proved to be one of her final widely broadcast live performances. I Look to You was followed by a world tour in 2010 that received mixed reviews regarding the state of Houston's voice, and her death on February 11, 2012, the eve of the 54th Grammy Awards, made the album her definitive final statement.
