I'm Your Baby Tonight is the third studio album by Whitney Houston, released in November 1990 on Arista Records, the first album produced with significant input from L.A. Reid and Babyface, whose New Jack Swing and contemporary R&B production framework gave Houston a more rhythmically contemporary sound than the adult contemporary approach of the first two albums. Houston did not write the majority of the original material, though the album's credits are more diverse than its predecessors, with contributions from L.A. Reid, Babyface, Stevie Wonder ('We Didn't Know,' a duet), and others. The title track, produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and 'All the Man That I Need' also reached number one, Houston's seventh and eighth number-one Hot 100 singles respectively. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and reached number one, has been certified triple platinum in the United States, and is generally regarded as the beginning of Houston's transition away from the purely adult contemporary sound of the Arista/Davis formula toward a more R&B-contemporary approach that would characterize her most beloved work in The Bodyguard soundtrack. I'm Your Baby Tonight demonstrates the commercial instinct of the Houston-Reid-Babyface partnership that had transformed the R&B landscape, and it stands as the last of Houston's purely studio albums before the film soundtrack work that would define her peak commercial period.
