Tyler Joseph wrote and produced Scaled and Icy largely alone during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, recording most of it at home, with additional production from Paul Meany, Mike Elizondo, and Greg Kurstin. The album steps back from the dense Trench mythology toward a brighter, more pop-oriented sound, though Joseph framed it as a fictional, government-sanctioned propaganda broadcast from within Dema sung by the captured Clancy. The title is an anagram of 'Clancy is dead,' tying the upbeat surface back to the ongoing narrative. Josh Dun's drums and Joseph's multi-instrumental performances remain the core of the record.
Twenty One Pilots' sixth studio album, released May 21, 2021. Released during the COVID-19 pandemic, the album takes a deliberately brighter and more pop-oriented approach compared to the Trench era. Ten of the eleven tracks were written solely by Tyler Joseph; the closing track 'Redecorate' is co-written with Paul Meany. Tyler Joseph self-produced the majority of tracks, with collaborators Mike Elizondo (tracks 1 and 7), Greg Kurstin, and Paul Meany assisting on select tracks. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200.
