By the Numbers
Acid Queen keeps Turner firmly in the interpreter's seat. The rock side is all covers, the Rolling Stones, Pete Townshend, and Led Zeppelin, and the soul side is given over to songs written by Ike Turner. Either way her name stays out of the writing credits. The split also shows the two pressures on her at this point, the new rock persona tied to her Tommy role and the older material still routed through Ike.
Acid Queen is the second solo studio album by Tina Turner, released in August 1975 and named for her role as the Acid Queen in the film version of The Who's Tommy. The first half is a hard-rock covers set, with Turner attacking songs by the Rolling Stones, Pete Townshend, and Led Zeppelin, while the second half features tracks written and produced by Ike Turner. Turner holds no writing credit anywhere on the album, a record built from Stones and Who material on one side and Ike Turner's songs on the other. It marked an attempt to position her as a rock interpreter ahead of her full solo break, and its Townshend covers tie directly to the Tommy role that raised her profile.
