Break Every Rule follows the Private Dancer formula, and that includes its authorship: Turner did not write a note of it. Terry Britten and Graham Lyle supply the bulk of the songs, with David Bowie, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, Mark Knopfler, and Rupert Hine filling out the rest. As ever, Turner's contribution is the voice, not the writing, the credits pointing to a roster of professional songwriters rather than to her.
Break Every Rule is the sixth solo studio album by Tina Turner, released in September 1986 as the follow-up to her career-defining Private Dancer. Reuniting her with producers Terry Britten and Rupert Hine and adding Mark Knopfler, Bryan Adams, and others, it carries forward the polished pop-rock sound of its predecessor. Turner again wrote nothing on the album, interpreting songs by Britten and Graham Lyle, David Bowie, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, and Mark Knopfler. The single 'Typical Male' became a major hit, the album sold strongly worldwide, and Turner won a Grammy for her performance of the song, confirming that her solo success was no accident.
