By the Numbers
Rough is Turner's first fully solo album away from Ike, and it stays true to her interpreter pattern: every song comes from another writer. The credits read like a covers wishlist, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Willie Nelson, Bob Seger, Hal David, Allen Toussaint, with Turner's name absent from all of them. She is choosing and singing songs here, not writing them.
Rough is the third solo studio album by Tina Turner, released in 1978 and her first record made entirely outside her partnership with Ike Turner. Produced by Bob Monaco, it pushes her toward a harder blues, rock, and disco mix, built once again from songs by outside writers. Turner does not have a writing credit on any track, covering material from Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Willie Nelson, Bob Seger, and Allen Toussaint among others. Commercially it went largely unnoticed and was not released in the United States, but it documents her working to define a solo rock direction in the lean years before Private Dancer.
