Tim McGraw's self-titled debut is a pure song-picker's record: he wrote none of its ten tracks, all supplied by Nashville writers like Steve Seskin, Joe Diffie, and Clay Blaker, with Byron Gallimore and James Stroud producing. It made little commercial impact, its highest single stalling at No. 47, and it remains the only McGraw studio album without a sales certification. The template was set early: McGraw the interpreter, not the author.

Curb released McGraw's debut in April 1993 after sessions spread across four Nashville studios between 1991 and 1993. Four singles came off it, 'What Room Was the Holiday In,' 'Welcome to the Club,' 'Two Steppin' Mind' and 'Memory Lane,' and none of them reached the country Top 40. It is the only studio album of his career that never earned a sales certification or entered the Top Country Albums chart. McGraw has no writing credit on any of the ten tracks; they came from Nashville songwriters including Steve Seskin, Joe Diffie and Kerry Kurt Phillips.
