By the Numbers
Trap Muzik is a foundational trap album, and T.I. wrote all of his own lyrics over production from DJ Toomp, David Banner, Kanye West, and Jazze Pha. It is where his street narratives and the Atlanta 808 sound crystallized into a subgenre. The comeback after his failed debut, it turned him into a star and a label boss at Grand Hustle.
T.I.'s second studio album, released August 19, 2003, through his own Grand Hustle Records and Atlantic Records. The album is considered one of the founding documents of trap music, a Atlanta subgenre built on heavy 808s, hi-hat patterns, and street narratives. "Rubber Band Man" featuring Lavell Crump (David Banner) became his first major hit, reaching number thirty on the Billboard Hot 100 and later being prominently reused in advertising. Kanye West produced two tracks including "Doin' My Job" and "Let Me Tell You Something," which samples Roger Troutman. DJ Toomp, San 'Chez' Holmes, and David Banner split production. T.I. wrote all his own lyrics; the album also features 8Ball & MJG and Bun B on "Bezzle."
