Data Insight

Julian Casablancas wrote all eleven tracks alone. That is unusual for a band whose sound is so obviously four other people playing together, and it is the arrangement that holds for most of the first decade: the band is a five-piece, the songwriter is one man. Gordon Raphael's production and Greg Calbi's mastering do the rest.

Is This It is The Strokes' debut, released in 2001 on RCA after a bidding war over their Modern Age EP. Gordon Raphael produced it. It sold a million copies in the United States, went three times platinum in the UK, and is credited with pulling guitar bands back into the mainstream on both sides of the Atlantic.
