Do the Marías write their own songs?

Yes, and the credit is remarkably tight. María Zardoya and Josh Conway co-wrote all twenty-seven tracks across Cinema and Submarine, and Conway produced every one of them. On Cinema the two of them are the only writers on the entire album. Submarine adds bandmates Jesse Perlman and Edward James on a few tracks plus a handful of outside names.

The Authorship Story

Data Insight

Every one of the twenty-seven tracks across both albums is written by María Zardoya and Josh Conway, and Conway produces all of them. On Cinema that is the entire writing credit: thirteen tracks, two names, no exceptions. Submarine opens the door slightly, bringing in Jesse Perlman on three and Edward James on two, plus outside names on four. The most unexpected credit on either record is 'If Only', where Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan appear alongside the pair, which points to an interpolation rather than a session.
