Bury the Hatchet is the fourth studio album by The Cranberries, released in April 1999 after a three-year break from recording. Self-produced with engineer Benedict Fenner, it returned to a brighter, more melodic sound after the harder edge of its predecessor, with O'Riordan writing more personal lyrics about motherhood, faith, and the pressures of fame. The single 'Animal Instinct' and 'Promises' restored the band's chart presence, and the album reached the US top 20. O'Riordan wrote all the lyrics, with the music shared between her and Noel Hogan and a group of songs credited to her alone. Certified platinum, it marked a confident comeback for the band.
