The Beatles (White Album)

The Beatles, commonly known as the White Album, is the ninth studio album by the band, a sprawling double LP released in November 1968 on Apple Records and produced by George Martin, Chris Thomas, and the band themselves during an increasingly fractured creative process following the TM retreat in Rishikesh. The album contains 30 tracks, the longest Beatles studio release by track count, and the songwriting credits reflect the fracturing of the collaborative dynamic: Lennon and McCartney wrote largely independently of each other, Harrison contributed four songs including 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' (with Eric Clapton on lead guitar) and 'Savoy Truffle,' and Ringo Starr composed his first-ever Beatles song, 'Don't Pass Me By.' The breadth of styles, Lennon's political pastiches, McCartney's music-hall diversions, Harrison's R&B explorations, Starr's country novelty, reflects not shared adventurousness but genuine creative separation, each member pursuing their own direction within the same project. Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is noteworthy both for Clapton's guest appearance and for Harrison's observation that Lennon and McCartney initially resisted the track, reflecting the hierarchical tensions that would eventually dissolve the band. The White Album is the most internally fragmented of all Beatles studio records and the most statistically revealing of the band's true creative divisions between its four members.
