Rubber Soul

Rubber Soul is the sixth studio album by The Beatles, released in December 1965 on Parlophone and produced by George Martin, often cited as the precise moment the album format replaced the single as the primary vehicle for serious rock ambition. It is the first Beatles album without any cover songs, marking a decisive and permanent shift to a fully self-written catalog that would characterize every subsequent release. Bob Dylan's influence is audible throughout the more introspective and literary lyrics, particularly Lennon's 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown),' 'In My Life,' and 'Nowhere Man', as the band moved from American R&B influences toward European folk and literary traditions. Harrison contributed 'Think for Yourself' (his second composer credit, noticeably more assured than 'Don't Bother Me') and made early use of fuzz bass and Indian instruments that would shape his increasingly distinctive solo work on subsequent albums. Rubber Soul directly influenced Brian Wilson's creation of Pet Sounds in 1966 and is widely regarded as one of the most important albums in the history of popular music, setting the standard for the rock album as a unified artistic statement.
