This is the album where Stevie Wonder stepped forward as a producer in his own right, personally producing two tracks and co-producing three others alongside Henry Cosby, after years of working under Motown's house staff. He co-wrote seven of the twelve songs, including the title track "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," which he built with Lee Garrett, his future wife Syreeta Wright, and his mother Lula Mae Hardaway. The record balances that emerging self-authored material against outside covers, pairing the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out" and Willie Dixon's "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" with the social-conscious ballad "Heaven Help Us All." The result documents Wonder's transition from interpreter of Motown songs toward the self-directed artist he would fully become a few years later.
Signed, Sealed and Delivered is Stevie Wonder's twelfth studio album, released in 1970 on Tamla Records. The album marks a turning point: for the first time, Stevie Wonder is credited as the sole producer, having taken partial creative control years ahead of his 1971 contract renegotiation. The title track, co-written with Lee Garrett, Syreeta Wright, and his mother Lula Mae Hardaway, was a #3 pop hit and one of the most infectious performances of his early career. 'Heaven Help Us All,' written by Ron Miller, became a #9 pop hit and demonstrated Wonder's ability to deliver socially conscious material with emotional gravity. 'We Can Work It Out,' a cover of the Beatles song, showed his confidence in reinterpreting any material on his own terms. Signed, Sealed and Delivered is the clearest preview of the complete-artist control that would define his career from Music of My Mind onward.
