Does Rauw Alejandro write his own songs?

Yes, and the credits show it plainly. On Cosa Nuestra his legal name, Raúl Ocasio Ruiz, is the only writer listed on the title track, "Déjame Entrar", "Ni Me Conozco", "Il Capo", "Mil Mujeres" and "Touching the Sky", and on nearly every other original he shares the line with the guest artist or a small group rather than a large camp. He executive produced that album and holds production credits across most of it under his El Zorro alias. The pattern goes back further. On Vice Versa, "Nubes", "2/Catorce" and "Aquel Nap ZzZz" carry his name alone, while the global single "Todo de Ti" credits a writing team around him. Premios Tu Música Urbano named him Songwriter/Composer of the Year in 2023, after nominating him for Composer of the Year the year before.

The Authorship Story

Data Insight

Rauw Alejandro has a hand in 92 of his 94 tracks, but he is the sole writer on only 14 of them. The catalogue runs on a fixed production circle rather than one partner: Eric Duars appears on 39 tracks, Kenobi on 38, Jorge E. Pizarro on 34, and all three turn up across every album. Saturno (2022) is the outlier, with 8 of its 18 songs written by Rauw alone, more solo writing than his other five albums put together. Vice Versa (2021) and Playa Saturno (2023) go the other way, every track a co-write.

Quick Facts

  • Also known asEl Zorro, the alias he uses for his own production credits

  • Vice Versa TourOver 327,000 tickets sold and over $24.5 million grossed

Creative Fingerprint

Reggaeton credits usually name a whole room, and his split the difference: "Todo de Ti" carries a writing team around him while "Nubes", "2/Catorce" and "Aquel Nap ZzZz" list him as the only writer, and on Cosa Nuestra he wrote alone on the title track, "Déjame Entrar" and "Touching the Sky" while executive producing the record and taking production credits under his El Zorro alias.

The Story

Rauw Alejandro is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter, born Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz in San Juan in 1993 and raised in Canóvanas and Carolina. He started posting music to SoundCloud in 2014 and released his first single as a lead artist, "Toda" with Alex Rose, in December 2017. His records move between reggaeton, Latin R&B, urbano, Latin trap and ballads, and he has won two Latin Grammy Awards and two Billboard Latin Music Awards. Rolling Stone called him the greatest showman in Latin music and compared his concerts to a Broadway production. He is credited as a writer across his own catalogue, working in the same team-writing model the rest of the genre uses.

Frequently Asked Questions Rauw Alejandro

Why do some of his songs list five or six writers?
That is how reggaeton and Latin pop usually credit a record, and his biggest ones follow the rule. "Todo de Ti" lists Eric "Duars" Pérez Rovira, José M. Collazo, Luis J. González, Rafa Pabón and Alejandro. "Desesperados" adds Chencho Corleone's side of the room on top of that same core. Collaborations pull in the guest and the guest's writers, so the credit grows with the feature list, not because he did less.
Does he produce his own records too?
He does, under the name El Zorro. Vice Versa lists "Rauw Alejandro 'El Zorro'" first among its producers, and on Cosa Nuestra the El Zorro credit turns up across most of the track listing next to Dímelo Ninow, Kenobi and Mr. NaisGai. He is also credited as executive producer of that entire album.
Has he written for other artists?
His second Latin Grammy came that way. He won Album of the Year in 2022 as a songwriter on Rosalía's Motomami, and was nominated in the same category the same year as a songwriter on Bad Bunny's Un Verano Sin Ti and Sebastián Yatra's Dharma. Un Verano Sin Ti also carried him to an Album of the Year nomination at the Grammy Awards in 2023.
Are there songs on his albums he did not write?
A few, and they are covers rather than outside pitches. "Tú con Él" on Cosa Nuestra is a salsa reading of the Frankie Ruiz song, credited to Eduardo Franco da Silva. "Se Fue" with Laura Pausini is a Spanish version of her "Non c'è", credited to Ignacio Ballesteros Díaz, Federico Cavalli, Pietro Cremonesi and Arcangelo Valsiglio.
Who does he write and build tracks with most often?
Dímelo Ninow and Kenobi work on most of Cosa Nuestra with him, with Mr. NaisGai, Tainy, Cauty, Mag and Tyler Spry taking individual tracks. Mr. NaisGai and Kenobi go back to Vice Versa, where Tainy, Caleb Calloway, Albert Hype, Orteez and Dulce como Candy also worked. Kenobi doubles as an engineer and a background vocalist on Cosa Nuestra.
Does the concept of an album come from him as well?
For Cosa Nuestra he wrote a character named after his own first and middle name, Raúl Alejandro, and placed him as an adult in New York City during the era of Puerto Rican migration there. He told Billboard how the planning works: "I sit at home, read a book, smoke a joint with some coffee, look at the sky, and map out what's coming." The title points at Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe's 1969 record and at the Sicilian mafia, which ties back to a great-grandfather from Palermo.
How has his approach to writing changed between albums?
He started work on Vice Versa two weeks after finishing Afrodisíaco and cut the number of collaborations on purpose so the record would be more personal. Caleb Calloway told Rolling Stone that Afrodisíaco was the commercial swing and Vice Versa was meant to be the experimental one. By Cosa Nuestra he was writing into salsa, bachata and live instrumentation, and told CR Fashion Book he was learning drums, piano and guitar.
Has his writing been recognised outside his own album cycle?
ASCAP has put him on its Latin Music Awards winning songs list year after year, including for "Fantasías", the "Tattoo" remix, "Todo de Ti", "Desesperados", "Te Felicito", "Punto 40" and "Diluvio". SESAC Latina listed "Que Le Dé", "La Nota" and "TBT" among its winning songs as well.
Where were his recent records made?
Cosa Nuestra was cut at Electric Garden in Brooklyn, 5020 Studio in Miami and Sensei Sound in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Carolina is one of the two towns he grew up in, so the album that reaches hardest for New York was partly tracked at home.
