Does Peso Pluma write his own songs?

Mostly yes, though corridos tumbados treats writing as shared labour and his credits show it. On Génesis his legal name, Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, is in the writer line of "Luna", "77", "Rubicon", "Las Morras", "PRC" and "Tulum". On Éxodo it appears on "Bruce Wayne", "Hollywood", "Reloj", "Ice", "Solicitado", "Santal 33", "Vino Tinto", "14 - 14" and every one of the eight tracks on the album's urbano second disc. He is also a credited producer on all 16 tracks on disc 1 of that album. What he does not do is take everything. "Rosa Pastel" is written by Jasiel Nuñez, "Carnal" and "Gavilán II" by his cousin Roberto Laija García, who records as Tito Double P, and "Ella Baila Sola", the song that broke him worldwide, by Pedro Tovar of Eslabón Armado. The writing side of his work has been voted on twice: he won Songwriter of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2023 and again in 2024.

The Authorship Story

Data Insight

Peso Pluma is credited on 53 of his 78 tracks, and the trend runs one direction. He wrote seven of the ten songs on Efectos Secundarios in 2021 by himself; by Éxodo in 2024 nothing is written alone, 18 tracks are co-writes and six carry no credit for him at all. Tito Double P is the anchor at 24 tracks, well ahead of any other writer, and Édgar Barrera follows at 9. Corridos work this way, with a singer performing what a corridista wrote, so the credit shape reflects the form rather than any absence of work. Four tracks on the 2020 debut Ah y Qué list no writer, and those are simply unknown.

Creative Fingerprint

Corridos tumbados is a feature-driven form partly built on corridos written to order, and Kabande works both ends of it: he is a credited writer across Éxodo, from "Bruce Wayne" and "Hollywood" through "Bellakeo" and "Teka", and a credited producer on all 16 tracks on disc 1, while the pen on cuts like "Sr. Smith" and "Belanova" goes to his cousin Tito Double P and to writers around his own label.

The Story

Peso Pluma is a Mexican singer, songwriter and record producer, born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija in Zapopan in 1999. He put out two albums on a small Jalisco label before the corridos tumbados wave carried him onto the Billboard Hot 100, and "Ella Baila Sola" with Eslabon Armado became the first regional Mexican song to top the Billboard Global 200. Génesis debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, the highest a regional Mexican album has ever entered that chart.

Frequently Asked Questions Peso Pluma

Who writes the songs he does not?
Tito Double P is the name that recurs. He wrote "Carnal" and "Gavilán II" on Génesis and "Sr. Smith" and "Belanova" on Éxodo, and co-wrote "Las Morras" and "PRC". Jasiel Nuñez wrote "Rosa Pastel" and co-wrote "Me Activo". Estevan Plazola co-wrote "Bruce Wayne", "Hollywood" and "14 - 14". On the pop and urbano end, the Mexican songwriter Édgar Barrera turns up on "Tulum", "Santal 33", "Vino Tinto", "14 - 14" and "Tommy & Pamela".
Did Peso Pluma write "Ella Baila Sola"?
No. Pedro Tovar, lead vocalist of Eslabón Armado, wrote it and previewed it to Kabande over a phone call at an airport. Tovar said publicly he was not receiving credit after Kabande performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon without the group. Kabande answered from a stage in San José, California, telling the crowd to give credit where it was due and naming Tovar as the writer. When the song was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Regional Mexican Song at the Latin Grammy Awards in 2023, the nominations went to Tovar as songwriter.
Has he written corridos on commission?
Yes. In a 2022 interview with Soy Grupero he confirmed making corridos por encargo, songs written to order about named traffickers. He has since described that as simply how the corridos tumbados world operates.
Why are his lyrics controversial?
"Siempre Pendientes" with Luis R. Conriquez carries lines about guarding Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán's territory; YouTube pulled the video three days after it went up. Spotify censored a line in "El Azul" with Junior H for its allusion to fentanyl. A Culiacán performance in October 2022 ran with an image of Guzmán projected behind him and drew condemnation from local women's groups and the city council. Chile's interior and justice ministers backed calls to withdraw his invitation to the Viña del Mar festival in 2024. He has also been threatened in banners signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which cost him a Tijuana date.
How does he answer the narcocorrido criticism?
He denies any real cartel tie. On the Culiacán fallout he told Pepe Garza that people tried to smear him and that he kept moving forward with his career. His broader line is blunter: "I am an artist, and we do nothing more than appear on stage and sing what we write."
Does he produce his own records?
Yes. Génesis lists him among its producers alongside Jesús Iván Leal Reyes, Ernesto Fernandez, George Prajin, Tito Double P and Édgar Barrera. On Éxodo he is a credited producer on all 16 tracks on disc 1, the regional Mexican half, while the eight urbano tracks on disc 2 go to outside producers including DJ Snake, Chris Jedi and Gaby Music, and Charlie Handsome.
How does Double P Records shape his writing?
He launched the label with Prajin in April 2023 and signed Tito Double P, Raúl Vega and Jasiel Nuñez on the day of the announcement, taking the roles of chief executive and head of A&R. The first release was "Rosa Pastel" with Nuñez, a song Nuñez wrote. Much of the writing on Génesis and Éxodo moves inside that roster rather than coming from outside rooms.
Who are his regular collaborators?
Natanael Cano, Junior H, Gabito Ballesteros, Luis R. Conriquez, Óscar Maydon, Jasiel Nuñez, Netón Vega, Eslabón Armado and Tito Double P on the regional Mexican side. Éxodo widened the circle to Cardi B, Quavo, Rich the Kid, Anitta, Kenia Os, Iván Cornejo, Chino Pacas and DJ Snake.
How did he learn to write?
He picked up the guitar at 15 from YouTube videos and started putting songs in a diary, something his schoolmates ridiculed him for. He has described it as therapy: "That's where I'd write how I was feeling, then I realized some stuff would rhyme. I kept practicing and became better with time."
