Data Insight

Yield is the most lyrically collaborative Pearl Jam album, and the credits show it: Eddie Vedder still wrote most lyrics, but Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Jack Irons each took the words on a track, a rare break from Vedder's usual lyric monopoly. The music remains spread across the band with no outside writers, so the record stays fully self-authored while distributing both words and music more evenly than usual.

Yield is the fifth studio album by Pearl Jam, released in February 1998 and a return to more direct, melodic rock after the experimental No Code. It is the band's most collaborative album lyrically: while Eddie Vedder still wrote most of the words, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Jack Irons each contributed lyrics, a rare loosening of Vedder's grip on the writing. Musically it spans the soaring single 'Given to Fly' and the ferocious 'Do the Evolution,' whose animated video became a touchstone. It was Jack Irons's final album with the band before Matt Cameron took over the drum seat. Yield reached number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum.
