By the Numbers
Binaural keeps Vedder as the main lyricist while Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard each write a few full songs, words and music, and new drummer Matt Cameron immediately joins the composer pool on 'Evacuation.' There are no outside writers, so the album is wholly the band's, with the credits showing a lineup change feeding straight into the songwriting.
Binaural is the sixth studio album by Pearl Jam, released in May 2000 and the first to feature drummer Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden. It was also the first Pearl Jam album in a decade not produced by Brendan O'Brien, with Tchad Blake bringing atmospheric, experimental textures and the binaural recording technique that gives the album its name. Eddie Vedder wrote most of the lyrics while sharing writing duties with Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, and Cameron contributed music immediately on 'Evacuation.' The mood is darker and more introspective, touched by space and astronomy imagery on songs like 'Nothing as It Seems' and 'Light Years.' It was certified gold, a step down in sales from the band's 1990s peak.
