Dark Matter marks a rare change in the Pearl Jam credit pattern: Eddie Vedder still wrote every lyric, but producer Andrew Watt is credited alongside the full band on the music for every track, the closest the band has come to a recurring outside co-writer. Josh Klinghoffer adds a credit on 'Something Special.' The lyric authorship stays entirely Vedder's, while the music opens up to a trusted collaborator behind the boards.
Dark Matter is the twelfth studio album by Pearl Jam, released in April 2024 and produced by Andrew Watt, a much younger hitmaker and lifelong fan who pushed the band to record fast and live in the studio. The result is one of their most energetic late-career records, leaning into urgent, muscular rock on the title track and 'Running.' Eddie Vedder wrote all of the lyrics, while the music is credited to the whole band together with Watt, a rare co-writing role for a producer in the Pearl Jam catalog. It was the final album to feature longtime drummer Matt Cameron before his 2024 departure. Dark Matter debuted at the top of charts worldwide and earned three Grammy nominations, including Best Rock Album.
