By the Numbers
Vs. shows the Pearl Jam authorship split at its most democratic: Eddie Vedder wrote every lyric, while the music for all twelve tracks is credited to the full band rather than broken out per member. There are no outside writers, so the record is entirely self-authored, the words Vedder's and the music a collective effort of the five-piece lineup.
Vs. is the second studio album by Pearl Jam, released in October 1993, and a harder, more aggressive record than their debut. Recorded as the band wrestled with sudden fame, it channels that tension into politically charged tracks like 'W.M.A.' and 'Glorified G' alongside the hit 'Daughter.' Eddie Vedder wrote all of the lyrics while the music was credited to the whole band, a fully democratic split with no outside writers. The album set a record for first-week sales at the time, moving nearly a million copies in seven days, and was certified seven-times platinum. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, it began a long working relationship that shaped much of the band's catalog.
