The Story

One Direction were a British-Irish boy band formed in London in 2010 on the seventh series of the UK talent competition The X Factor, assembled by judge Nicole Scherzinger from five solo contestants, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Signed to Simon Cowell's Syco Records and Columbia Records, they became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, with combined sales of over 70 million records worldwide, releasing five studio albums between 2011 and 2015. Their first two albums, Up All Night and Take Me Home, were written almost entirely by outside professional songwriters and contained virtually no member writing credits, defining them as a classic manufactured pop act. Beginning with Midnight Memories in 2013, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson began accumulating co-writing credits, a trend that accelerated significantly on Four (2014) and Made in the A.M. (2015). Zayn Malik departed in March 2015, and the remaining four members released Made in the A.M. before announcing an indefinite hiatus in January 2016; Harry Styles subsequently emerged as one of the most critically lauded solo songwriters of his generation.
