Year Zero

Year Zero is the fifth studio album by Nine Inch Nails, released in April 2007 on Nothing/Interscope Records and produced by Reznor and Atticus Ross, a concept album set in a dystopian America of 2022 in which environmental collapse and government authoritarianism have erased civil society, accompanied by an alternate reality game (ARG) that wove fictional government documents, mysterious websites, and USB drives left at concerts into the album's narrative. Reznor wrote all material; the album's themes addressed the Bush administration's post-9/11 security state with a directness that made it one of the most explicitly political mainstream rock albums of the decade, alongside the ARG's satirical government documents that circulated independently. 'Survivalism,' 'Capital G,' and 'The Good Soldier' were the principal tracks; 'Survivalism' reached number three on the Modern Rock chart. Year Zero debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 188,000 first-week sales and has been certified gold in the United States; it is regarded by critics as the most complete demonstration of Reznor's ability to integrate conceptual and narrative ambition into a commercially viable rock album structure. The album's ARG, one of the earliest large-scale music-linked alternate reality games, remains one of the most innovative marketing and artistic integrations in the history of recorded music, and its political themes, while tied to the specific context of the Bush administration, have gained renewed relevance in subsequent years as the social conditions they addressed have proven more durable than the specific administration that inspired them.
