Nelly wrote his own raps on Nellyville, his chart-topping 2002 follow-up, while expanding his roster of producers. The Neptunes produced the Grammy-winning number 1 hit 'Hot in Herre,' and his longtime producer Jason 'Jay E' Epperson, Ryan Bowser, the Trackboyz, Just Blaze and Waiel Yaghnam handled other tracks. Kelly Rowland sings on the number 1 ballad 'Dilemma,' Justin Timberlake guests on 'Work It,' and St. Lunatics members Kyjuan, Ali and Murphy Lee appear on 'Air Force Ones.'
Nelly's second studio album, released June 25, 2002, through Universal Records and Fo' Reel Entertainment. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in its first week. The Neptunes-produced "Hot in Herre" became a defining summer anthem, spending seven weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "Dilemma" featuring Kelly Rowland spent ten consecutive weeks at number one, one of the longest-running chart toppers in the Hot 100's history, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Justin Timberlake appears on "Work It" and Just Blaze produces "Roc the Mic (Remix)," a Beanie Sigel and Freeway track on which Nelly and Murphy Lee are featured. Nelly co-wrote all lead tracks; Jay E again produced the bulk of the album.
