Nelly wrote his own raps across his Diamond-certified debut, building most of the record with St. Louis producer Jason 'Jay E' Epperson, who shaped the album's bounce-driven Midwest sound. St. Lunatics affiliates City Spud, Murphy Lee, Ali and Kyjuan co-wrote and guested throughout, and a young Lil' Wayne (credited as Dwayne Carter Jr.) appears as a writer. Additional production came from City Spud, Steve 'Blast' Wills and Basement Beats, with Cedric the Entertainer voicing interludes.
Nelly's debut studio album, released June 27, 2000, through Universal Records and his own Fo' Reel Entertainment imprint. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and spent four weeks there, eventually selling over eight million copies in the United States and earning diamond certification from the RIAA. Production came almost entirely from Jay E (Jason Epperson) and City Spud (Lavell Webb), both members of the St. Lunatics, Nelly's rap group from St. Louis. Wikipedia credits Nelly (Cornell Haynes Jr.) as the primary writer on all tracks, with named co-writers being additional contributors. The St. Lunatics collective, including Murphy Lee, Ali, and Kyjuan, appear throughout as both featured artists and co-writers. Cedric the Entertainer recorded spoken interludes opening and closing the album. Lil Wayne appears on the fan-favorite "For My."
