Nelly wrote his own raps across Brass Knuckles, his first album in four years, while leaning on a deep roster of outside producers including Polow da Don, The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, Sean Garrett, Akon, and Giorgio Tuinfort. The guest list is one of the densest of his career, pulling in Fergie on 'Party People,' Ashanti and Akon on 'Body on Me,' plus Usher, Ciara, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, and others. The varied production keeps the record split between club tracks and radio-pop crossovers rather than a single cohesive sound.
Nelly's fifth studio album, released September 16, 2008, through Universal Motown Records and his own Derrty Entertainment imprint. It was his first album distributed through a new label home after leaving Universal Records proper. Polow da Don produced five tracks, including the promotional singles "Party People" featuring Fergie and "Stepped on My J'z" featuring Ciara and Jermaine Dupri. Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg appear on "LA," produced by Tha Bizness. Akon and Ashanti appear on "Body on Me," co-produced by Akon. Public Enemy's Chuck D contributes to "Self-Esteem." The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200.
