By the Numbers
This album is a pure self-author statement: Neil Diamond wrote all twelve original songs alone, so the writing credit is his birth name, Neil Leslie Diamond, on every track. The complexity here is production, not authorship. The Memphis-cut songs were produced by Chips Moman and Tommy Cogbill at American Sound Studio, while Diamond and Tom Catalano produced the remaining sessions, giving the record a split production map under a single songwriter. 'Sweet Caroline,' the song most people associate with the album, was a Diamond original recorded at American Sound with a Charles Calello arrangement and was not on the first pressing; it was added only after its single success. Nothing on the record is a cover.
Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show is the fourth studio album by Neil Diamond, released in April 1969 on Uni Records and his first album for the label. It marks the start of his fruitful Memphis period, with several tracks cut at Chips Moman's American Sound Studio using the house rhythm section that also backed Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield. Diamond wrote every song on the record himself, from the gospel-charged title track to storytelling pieces like 'And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind.' The title single reached the Billboard Hot 100, but the album's fortunes changed when 'Sweet Caroline' was issued as a single months later and climbed to number four, prompting Uni to append it to reissue pressings. The record was certified Gold in the United States and became the platform for the run of hits that turned Diamond into a headline solo star.
