Missy Elliott wrote her own raps and co-wrote the album's songs with Timbaland, who produced the bulk of the record and built it around bass-heavy beats and old-school hip-hop nostalgia. The lead single 'Work It' and 'Gossip Folks' (featuring Ludacris) were both Elliott-Timbaland productions that became her commercial high point. Guest verses came from Method Man, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, TLC and Ms. Jade, with additional production support from Craig Brockman, Errol McCalla and Nisan Stewart.
Missy Elliott's fourth studio album, released November 12, 2002, through The Goldmind Inc. and Elektra Records. Under Construction debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it her highest-charting US album and one of the best-selling albums of 2002. It was also her most politically engaged album, featuring interludes addressing the deaths of Aaliyah and Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes and reflecting on hip-hop culture. Elliott shares executive producer credit with Timbaland, and Timbaland and Elliott are credited as co-producers on all but two tracks, "Pussycat" is produced by Elliott and Errol McCalla Jr., and "Nothing Out There for Me" (featuring Beyoncé) is produced by Elliott, Craig Brockman, and Nisan Stewart. "Work It" was the lead single and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, earning Elliott Grammy Awards for Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Album. Elliott co-wrote all thirteen standard tracks.
