Can't Be Tamed marked Miley Cyrus's full move into dance-pop and a more adult image, and she co-wrote eleven of its twelve songs. Rock Mafia and John Shanks produced most of the record, with Shanks co-writing several tracks alongside her. The title track gave her a top ten hit, though the album sold less than her teen pop releases.
Cyrus's third studio album marked her deliberate break from the Disney brand, pairing uptempo Rock Mafia productions, including the title track and 'Not Myself Tonight', with a run of John Shanks-produced ballads that dominate the album's second half.
