Overexposed is Maroon 5's most openly pop record, built with a deep bench of outside writers and producers including Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, and Shellback. Adam Levine still has a writing credit on every track and James Valentine contributes, but the band shares the page with chart specialists far more than on its earlier albums. The approach produced the number one "One More Night" and the number two "Payphone," cementing the group as a pop singles act.
Overexposed is Maroon 5's fourth studio album, released June 26, 2012, on A&M Octone Records, and represents a decisive turning point in the band's creative approach. Max Martin served as executive producer and recruited his usual collaborators, Shellback, Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, and others, to co-write and produce most of the album, shifting Maroon 5 firmly into the pop songwriting-room model. James Valentine's guitar work appears on only a handful of tracks, and the rest of the band's writing contributions are minimal compared to earlier albums. The lead single 'Payphone' featuring Wiz Khalifa reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by 'One More Night,' which spent nine consecutive weeks at number one, Maroon 5's longest chart run to that point. 'Moves Like Jagger,' a bonus track from the Hands All Over reissue, had already given the band their first Hot 100 number one before this album arrived, and Overexposed continued that pop momentum at the cost of their earlier rock-band identity.
