Special is Lizzo's fourth studio album, written and produced largely with longtime collaborator Ricky Reed alongside Blake Slatkin, Max Martin and others. Its lead single "About Damn Time" became a global hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and going on to win the Grammy for Record of the Year. The record leans into upbeat funk, disco and pop, with "Coldplay" interpolating Coldplay's "Yellow" and "Grrrls" built around the Beastie Boys' "Girls."
Special is Lizzo's fourth studio album, released 15 July 2022. The lead single "About Damn Time" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album features an unusually large writing room, "Grrrls" incorporates a writing credit for Max Martin, Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys, and Rick Rubin alongside a sample clearance; "Coldplay" samples a Coldplay composition and credits all four band members as writers; "Naked" uses a Kool & the Gang sample crediting six of their members. "Break Up Twice" features writing credits from Mark Ronson and Lauryn Hill. Peter Svensson of The Cardigans co-wrote "2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)." Lizzo co-wrote all twelve tracks.
