Data Insight

Awake marks the point where Groban shifted from pure interpreter toward co-writer, taking a songwriting credit on 4 of the 13 standard tracks ("February Song," "Now or Never," "Lullaby," "Machine") alongside outside writers like John Ondrasik, Imogen Heap, Dave Matthews and Eric Mouquet. The Italian and Spanish tracks came from separate European songwriting teams - Marco Marinangeli and Leo Z (Leonardo De Bernardini) for the Italian material, Oksana Grigorieva and Claudia Brant for the Spanish. "Un giorno per noi" is a re-lyricized cover of Nino Rota's "A Time for Us" theme from the 1968 Romeo and Juliet film, and "Weeping" is a cover of South African songwriter Dan Heymann's 1987 anti-apartheid song, both credited solely to their original writers rather than Groban.

Josh Groban's third studio album, blending operatic pop and classical crossover with his first significant run of self-penned songwriting.

Frequently Asked Questions Awake

Did Josh Groban write any songs on Awake?
Yes. He holds a co-writing credit on 4 of the 13 standard tracks - "February Song" (with Marius de Vries and John Ondrasik), "Now or Never" (with Imogen Heap), "Lullaby" (with Dave Matthews and Jochem van der Saag) and "Machine" (with Eric Mouquet and Dave Bassett). Is "Un giorno per noi" a cover?
Yes. The melody is Nino Rota's theme for the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, known in English as "A Time for Us" (lyrics by Lawrence Kusik and Edward A. Snyder). Groban sings an Italian-language lyric written by Alfredo Rapetti.
Who produced Awake?
The album used a rotating cast of producers by track: Marius de Vries, Tawgs Salter, David Foster with Humberto Gatica, Imogen Heap, Glen Ballard with Groban co-producing, and Eric Mouquet with Groban.
What languages are the songs in?
Most of the album is in English, but as on Groban's other records, several tracks are in Italian ("Mai," "L'ultima notte," "Un giorno per noi") and Spanish ("Un día llegará," "Solo por ti").
