After a run of nearly feature-free albums, The Off-Season opens Cole's writing back up to guests, bringing in 21 Savage, Morray, Lil Baby, 6lack, and Bas. He still wrote all of his own verses and produced much of the record, working with a deep board of collaborators including Timbaland, Boi-1da, T-Minus, and DJ Dahi. Cole framed the album as years of sharpening, a warm-up before a planned final record.
The Off-Season is the sixth studio album by J. Cole, released on May 14, 2021 through Dreamville Records, Roc Nation, and Interscope Records. The hip hop album was produced by Cole with T-Minus, Timbaland, Boi-1da, DJ Dahi, Frank Dukes, and Jake One, and features 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Morray, 6lack, and Bas. Its standout tracks include "My Life" with 21 Savage and Morray, "Amari," and "Interlude." The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 282,000 album-equivalent units and posted the largest streaming week of 2021 at the time of its release. It earned a Best Rap Album Grammy nomination and served as a lead-in to Cole's long-promised The Fall-Off.
