4 Your Eyez Only is a narrative concept album, much of it written from the perspective of a friend who died, addressed to that friend's daughter. It has essentially no rap features, so the verses are all Cole's, and he produced it with Vinylz, Boi-1da, and Frank Dukes among others. The jazz-inflected production and storytelling make it his most conceptually tight record.
4 Your Eyez Only is the fourth studio album by J. Cole, released on December 9, 2016 through Dreamville Records, Roc Nation, and Interscope Records. A conscious hip hop and jazz rap record, it was produced by Cole alongside Vinylz, Boi-1da, Cardiak, Frank Dukes, and Elite, with Ari Lennox providing the album's only guest vocal on "Change." Its singles include "Deja Vu" and "Neighbors." The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 363,000 first-week copies and was later certified platinum by the RIAA. Built around a narrative about a friend's life and death, it addresses mass incarceration, racial injustice, and fatherhood, and is often called Cole's most mature work.
