Mercury - Act 1 was produced by Mattman & Robin, Joel Little, and Brandon Darner with Rick Rubin serving as executive producer, Rubin's involvement marked a significant shift in Imagine Dragons' studio approach, bringing a more stripped-back and emotionally direct sound. Serban Ghenea mixed all tracks except "Dull Knives," which Wayne Sermon mixed; Randy Merrill handled mastering. The album debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 with 31,000 equivalent album units in its first week. "Follow You" reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Mercury: Act 1 is the fifth studio album by Imagine Dragons, released in September 2021 on Interscope / KIDinaKORNER and produced by Jayson DeZuzio, Mattman & Robin, Joel Little, and Rick Rubin. The first of a two-part release, the album was written partly in response to the death of drummer Daniel Platzman's best friend and addresses themes of grief, mortality, and finding meaning through loss. 'Enemy,' created for the Netflix animated series Arcane with rapper Jid, became the band's biggest streaming hit to date. Rick Rubin's involvement brought a stripped-down directness to some tracks while the band's signature arena production remained intact on the bigger anthems. Mercury, Act 1 debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and represented a meaningful artistic deepening for a band that had built its career on emotionally resonant uplift.
