By the Numbers
My Way is built around the title song, whose English lyrics Paul Anka wrote for Sinatra over a French melody by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. As always Sinatra interpreted rather than wrote, here covering contemporary material by Lennon-McCartney, Paul Simon, and Jacques Brel alongside the anthem that became his signature.
My Way is the thirty-sixth studio album by Frank Sinatra, released in March 1969 on Reprise Records and produced by Don Costa. It is notable primarily as the source of the title track, Paul Anka's English adaptation of Claude François's 'Comme d'habitude,' which became the most frequently associated song of Sinatra's final three decades and one of the most-played songs at funerals in the English-speaking world. Sinatra did not write any of the tracks; Anka's English lyric for 'My Way,' written specifically for Sinatra and depicting a man reviewing his life with unapologetic self-ownership, was recognized immediately as a perfect vehicle for the persona Sinatra had embodied throughout his career, and Sinatra performed it at nearly every concert for the remainder of his life despite reportedly growing to dislike it. The album also contains a cover of 'Yesterday' and 'If You Go Away' (Anka's adaptation of Jacques Brel's 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'), reflecting the album's French-influenced composition alongside the American songbook material. My Way reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified gold in the United States. While it is not critically regarded as one of Sinatra's finest albums, its cultural footprint is larger than almost any other single title in his catalog, driven almost entirely by the ubiquity of the title track. The album's broader significance is primarily commercial and cultural rather than artistic (the dozen tracks surrounding the title song are solid Sinatra-Reprise productions), but 'My Way' itself has accumulated more cultural weight than almost any other single song in the Sinatra catalog and is performed at funerals, graduations, and retirement celebrations in over 40 countries to this day.
