Data Insight

The Eminem Show is the album where Eminem took the production reins, self-producing most of it with help from Dr. Dre and Jeff Bass. He wrote every verse, turning to more personal, political, and rock-influenced material, and it was one of the best-selling albums of the 2000s.

The Eminem Show is the fourth studio album by Eminem, released in May 2002 on Aftermath/Interscope Records. It was the first album on which Eminem served as primary producer for most tracks, co-producing the majority of the record with Jeff Bass and taking sole production credit on several tracks, a significant shift in his creative role from the Dr. Dre-dominated production of the first two major-label albums. Eminem wrote all lyrics; the album addresses his divorce from Kim Scott, his ongoing legal battles, the post-9/11 political climate, and the pressures of his own celebrity, moving from the Slim Shady comic extremism toward more autobiographical and politically engaged content. 'Without Me' and 'Cleanin' Out My Closet' were the principal singles; 'Without Me' became one of the defining hip-hop videos of the era, and 'Cleanin' Out My Closet' addressed his estranged relationship with his mother in terms that generated substantial family dispute. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, sold 7.6 million copies in the United States alone, and won the Grammy for Best Rap Album. The Eminem Show is the first Eminem album in which his own production voice, rather than Dr. Dre's, is the dominant sonic identity, a transition that would characterize all subsequent releases.
