Relapse is the sixth studio album by Eminem, released in May 2009 on Aftermath/Interscope Records and produced almost entirely by Dr. Dre. It marked Eminem's return after a five-year absence during which he had been in rehabilitation for an addiction to prescription sleeping pills, specifically Ambien and Vicodin, and had suffered the death of his close friend Proof. Eminem wrote all lyrics; the album returns to the Slim Shady persona and its shock-comedy serial-killer narratives, which many critics found tonally dated given the five-year gap and the more mature directional shift of Encore. Dr. Dre's production, dense and bass-heavy with horror film sonic references, was praised as among his strongest solo production work, while the critical conversation focused primarily on whether Eminem's lyrical approach had evolved or regressed. 'We Made You' and 'Beautiful' were the principal singles; 'Beautiful' is the album's most unguarded track, a direct first-person account of the depression and isolation that characterized his years away from recording. It stands apart from the Slim Shady material in emotional register. Relapse debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, has been certified four-times platinum in the United States, and won the Grammy for Best Rap Album, though Eminem himself has publicly criticized the album's quality in subsequent interviews.
