The Long Run is dominated by the Frey and Henley partnership, who share credit on nearly every track, regularly pulling in Don Felder, Joe Walsh, and outside writers J.D. Souther and Bob Seger. New bassist Timothy B. Schmit makes an immediate mark, co-writing and singing lead on 'I Can't Tell You Why.' Joe Walsh's 'In the City,' co-written with Barry De Vorzon, came over from his solo and film work.
The Long Run is the sixth studio album by Eagles, released in September 1979 and the last of the band's original run before their 1980 breakup. It was the first album with bassist Timothy B. Schmit, who replaced Randy Meisner and immediately scored a hit with his co-write and lead vocal 'I Can't Tell You Why.' Produced again by Bill Szymczyk through long and difficult sessions, it spun off the number-one single 'Heartache Tonight.' Don Henley and Glenn Frey wrote or co-wrote nearly every track, often with Don Felder, Joe Walsh, J.D. Souther, or Bob Seger. It won a Grammy for 'Heartache Tonight' and was certified seven-times platinum.
