Long Road Out of Eden keeps Henley and Frey at the writing core, now regularly partnered with touring guitarist Steuart Smith, who co-wrote several of the album's strongest tracks. The reunited band also leaned heavily on outside writers across the double album, with J.D. Souther, Jack Tempchin, Paul Carrack, Frankie Miller, and others supplying full songs the band covered. The lead vocal still rotated among Henley, Frey, Walsh, and Schmit.
Long Road Out of Eden is the seventh studio album by Eagles, released in October 2007 and their first album of new material in nearly thirty years. A sprawling double album recorded by the reunited core of Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, it spans country rock, hard rock, and political balladry across the ten-minute title suite. The band self-produced with longtime guitarist Steuart Smith and others, and the album debuted at number one in the United States despite an exclusive retail deal. Henley and Frey again lead the writing, often with Smith, alongside outside songs from J.D. Souther, Jack Tempchin, Paul Carrack, and others. It won two Grammys and was certified seven-times platinum.
