By the Numbers
On the Border keeps Frey and Henley at the writing core while leaning more on outside songs than the debut. Jack Tempchin and Robb Strandlund wrote 'Already Gone,' Tom Waits wrote 'Ol' 55,' and Paul Craft wrote 'Midnight Flyer,' so several of the album's cuts came from outside the band. Don Felder arrived during the sessions, and the band's first number-one single, 'Best of My Love,' was a Henley, Frey, and J.D. Souther co-write.
On the Border is the third studio album by Eagles, released in March 1974 and the record where the band moved toward a harder rock edge. Sessions began with Glyn Johns but shifted to Bill Szymczyk, who would produce the band through its peak years, and guitarist Don Felder joined late in the recording. The album yielded the band's first number-one single in 'Best of My Love,' a Henley, Frey, and J.D. Souther co-write, alongside the hit 'Already Gone.' Writing again centers on Frey and Henley with outside contributions from Souther, Jack Tempchin, Tom Waits, and Paul Craft. Certified double platinum, it bridged the band's country rock roots and the rock sound that followed.
