Donna Summer, credited under her legal name LaDonna Adrian Gaines, co-wrote the title track and most of the album with producer Michael Omartian, her main writing partner on this record. Bruce Sudano, her husband and a member of Brooklyn Dreams, adds a co-writing credit on four songs: 'Woman,' 'Love Has a Mind of Its Own,' 'Tokyo,' and 'People, People.' Session players Jay Graydon and Greg Phillinganes each contribute a single co-write, on 'He's a Rebel'/'Woman' and 'Stop, Look and Listen' respectively. The one exception to the Summer-Omartian default is 'I Do Believe (I Fell in Love),' which Summer wrote entirely on her own, the closest thing on the record to a solo statement.
She Works Hard for the Money is the eleventh studio album by Donna Summer, released June 13, 1983, on Mercury Records after she settled a contract dispute with former label Casablanca's parent company PolyGram. Produced entirely by Michael Omartian, it moved her sound away from the Giorgio Moroder disco template toward a synth-driven post-disco and dance-pop style shaped for the MTV era. The title track, co-written by Summer and Omartian, became her biggest hit of the decade, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the R&B chart. The album also folded in outside contributions from Bruce Sudano, Jay Graydon, and Greg Phillinganes, plus guest vocal spots from British group Musical Youth and gospel singer Matthew Ward. It reached number nine on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in the United States, marking Summer's commercial comeback after a turbulent transition out of the Casablanca era.
