By the Numbers
Another Place and Time is an interpreter's record, not a songwriter's. All ten tracks were written and produced by the Stock Aitken Waterman team, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, who also arranged and mixed the album alongside engineer Pete Hammond. Summer's own pen appears only as a co-writing credit on three songs, 'This Time I Know It's for Real,' 'Sentimental,' and 'Whatever Your Heart Desires,' the closest the album comes to her having a hand in the material. Everywhere else her role is to sing songs built for her by the same production line that had just made Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue into stars, so the composer credits on this record belong overwhelmingly to SAW rather than to Summer herself.
Another Place and Time is Donna Summer's tenth studio album, released in March 1989 after her husband Bruce Sudano suggested she work with the Stock Aitken Waterman hit factory following their success with Rick Astley. Recorded at PWL Studios in London between September 1988 and January 1989, the album was written, arranged, and produced almost entirely by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, with Summer receiving a co-writing credit on only three of its ten tracks. Geffen Records declined to release the record in the United States, so Summer negotiated her own deal with Atlantic, which put the album out domestically. The lead single 'This Time I Know It's for Real' became her last US top-40 hit, and the album reached the UK top twenty and went gold there. Critical reaction was split at release, with some writers welcoming the commercial polish and others hearing it as a producer's record that smoothed over her distinct voice, though later reassessments have treated it more favorably as one of her stronger 1980s efforts.
