By the Numbers
7 is a double album split between a mainstream pop disc and an underground Jack Back disc, and David Guetta co-writes and produces across both. As Guetta framed it, the first album is completely pop and the second album is completely underground, with the second disc released under his Jack Back alias as a return to his house roots. The pop disc leans on guest topliners including Sia on 'Flames,' Justin Bieber on '2U,' and the Martin Garrix collaboration 'Like I Do,' with co-producers such as Giorgio Tuinfort, Stargate, Cirkut, and Carl Falk. Across the record Guetta operates as producer and architect, mixing star vocal features on disc one against stripped-back instrumental house cuts on disc two.
The seventh studio album by David Guetta, released on 14 September 2018 as a double set: disc one pop collaborations, disc two underground house credited to Jack Back, an alias he revealed with the record and also put out on its own as the Jack Back Mixtape. Guetta picked the title for what the number means to him rather than the album count alone, pointing out that seven closes a cycle, a week is seven days, and his birthday falls on 7 November. He carries a writing and production credit on every song, with guests running from Sia, Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber to J Balvin, Martin Garrix and Anne-Marie. Three tracks are built on older records: 'Goodbye' borrows from 'Time to Say Goodbye,' 'She Knows How to Love Me' from 'Tutti Frutti,' and 'Let It Be Me' from Suzanne Vega's 'Tom's Diner.' Nine singles came out ahead of it, and it opened at number 37 on the Billboard 200 while topping the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
