Cry Pretty is Underwood's biggest authorship leap: she co-wrote nine of the thirteen tracks and, for the first time, co-produced the album alongside David Garcia. It is also her first release for Capitol Nashville after leaving Arista. The combination of co-writing and co-production marks her fullest creative control to that point.
"Cry Pretty" is the 2018 sixth studio album by Carrie Underwood, a country record with pop and R&B influences that she co-produced with David Garcia and Jim Jonsin. The album produced the singles "Cry Pretty," "Love Wins," "Southbound," and "Drinking Alone," with songwriting contributions from Hillary Lindsey, Liz Rose, Lori McKenna, and Brett James, plus a guest appearance by Ludacris on "The Champion." It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with 266,000 album-equivalent units and topped Top Country Albums, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. The release gave Underwood the largest sales week for a country album in more than three years and the biggest female sales week of 2018. With "Cry Pretty," Underwood became the first woman to reach number 1 on the Billboard 200 with four country albums.
